D+ Bralettes Galore, Part I: Salem’s Scissors

salem's scissors

Bralette that will handle and contain a bigger bust is a Holy Grail for many of us – brands have a tendency to assume that we will have to be content with what they give us, no matter how much of a mismatch and shitty product that is gonna be. There are business though that accept the challenge and try to create proper D+ bralettes, with better or worse results. This November is clearly a bralette month as we are review three different bralette brands that declaratively sew for at least one of us, so here we go! Bralette Tests part 1: Salem’s Scissors.

Best way to start this review is to allow Sabrina to introduce herself and tell you, what she think of vanity sizing nad what is ber business philosophy.

We have just one issue with these bralettes – size. We gave Sabrina our measurements in hope this will help her in sewing them the right way and custom-fit. Unfortunately, something got lost in translation apparently, since the final effect is … random, from a lack of a better word.

I am 73 cm underbust and 93 cm in bust (28.7” / 36,6”) and I usually wear 30F UK or 65G EU. Sabrina made z 32G bralette, which unfortunately does not fit me at all – band is longer than my underbust measurement and stretched to more than I what I have in bust, so no wonder it gives no support at all. My bewilderment peaked when upon measuring it turned out that Magda’s 34H bralette has … shorter band than my 32G bra. Madź’s bra has too shallow cups and too loose band. Zero support and stitching that cuts into the breast are more than disappointing.

Additionally – Magda’s bra fits me perfectly, and yet her boobs are six cups bigger than mine. Oops.

We really had some high expectations and couldn’t wait to see if we can finally get some proper plus size bralettes. Sabrina’s bras are making quite a career over in the US and I was really hopeful, wanting to make my discovery of the year, yet when I got the package and dived into the reviews I discovered the band issue pops up quite often – this is a quote from one of the reviews:

“On a 28″ underbust, a 38″ stretched band (Taylor) cannot provide the same support as a 30″ stretched band (Kindred Bravely X-small Busty). Taylor ‘s narrow elastic underbust band and the band length (38″ stretched) seem the fit culprits. And, both could be remedied by adding a limited stretch, wider band. ” – Love4Pollinators

To sum things up – we both agree that the aesthetics do not suffer, since Sabrina sews very precisely and tastefully, color range of the fabrics she offers is a full rainbow. A big plus is the French Fries choice of fabric – it’s not exactly Pizza, which I think should have been featured on a bra long ago, but still. As you can see, Sabrina offers a plethora of choices of print and color combo, from wild to tame.

But she still needs to work on her sizing and adapt it to her clients’ bodies. One simply cannot assume, that the underbust measurement should equal the band measurement, because that gives no support at all. It is also hard to accept that giving your precise measurements results in receiving a custom product that would fit someone much bigger than you. I would suggest ordering the bralettes with your overbust measurement and the biggest stretched measurement of the band you can accept. We have faith! We have a lot of faith in Salem’s Scissors being worthy of attention and a second chance in the future, since little businesses like this one are a much better partner for a feedback exchange than a multinational corporations. For now we give Sabrina a gentle telling off and recognize the sizing mismatch as a minor hiccup. The situation was partially due to the fact that there is roughly 4.5k miles and an ocean between us and Sabrina, so there was no way to fit the bras in person.

Next week – next bralette post; this time with much more of a success story 😉
